Jamie* had struggled for over a year with a serious health issue, having had several surgeries and a long recuperation. Surgeries out of town had kept her from her own. Jamie receives Social Security so her income was limited. She had an extremely high electric bill which was a very big concern to her. The Salvation Army, through the Dollar Energy Program, a grant up to $500 for Mineral County residents, and additional help from other community organizations enabled Jamie to pay her electric bill and remain in her home. *Name has been changed

Kaitlyn and Sandy have been matched for 2 years and 9 months through Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Alleghenies. Coming from a large family, Kaitlyn was eager to meet her "Big sister" Sandy, and have fun, just the two of them! The match started out with the two going swimming every Thursday and talked about school and Kaitlyn's grades. Since the beginning of their match, Kaitlyn has learned to swim and brought her grades up. Kaitlyn's latest achievement is competing for the top prize in the Mineral County Science Fair. "We have started many traditions together," says Sandy, her Big Sister. "I think Kaitlyn is funny and lover her dearly." Sandy is hopeful that Kaitlyn will attend college and that their relationship will continue throughout adulthood!
