The Road to Community Impact

United Way of Mineral County received four proposals for after school and summer programs and will be funding all four proposals this year in the amount of $27,182. The Executive Committee of the United Way of Mineral County directed 40% of eligible funding to after school and summer programs which was determined by community stakeholders to be the major priority need in the County at this time.
The primary goal of the first proposal is to provide a Student Transitional Employment Program (STEP) for at risk students while improving school attendance with personal development and promoting graduation. The partnering agencies include the Developmental Center and Workshop (primary agency), the Mineral County Alternative School and the Mineral County Family Resource Network .
The second proposal is a collaborative effort with Girl Scouts for a Grow Strong program that is partnered with Mineral County Family Resource Network to attract non-Girl Scouts from the ages of 5 to 14, to a fun and educational healthy living program that will complement the school learning experience.
The third proposal is a project through Keyser Presbyterian Church and Helping Hands of the Potomac Highlands to provide a stable environment for many children after school who would otherwise be unsupervised. The program will include a combination of activities that will encourage physical activity, enhance academic performance and build essential life skills.
The YMCA in cooperation with Mineral County Board of Education, Tri-Towns After School Program and the Boy Scouts of the Potomac Council, will offer a Saturday Morning Superstars Program for targeted elementary school age youth to be transported to the Cumberland YMCA for 4 hours of fun and a variety of activities.
